News flash 9/17/05 The event was made extra special for burn-injured children who were given the opportunity to ride the parade route on a 1961 Orrene fire engine. This engine made a 3500 mile two week road trip from Brewster, New York last September, towing a 1939 Mack fire engine from Pohonahay, Pennsylvania. McPherson recruited James Whitecastle, private owner of 114 fire trucks, to provide the rig for these child survivors.

A message of "Thanks" from NitrosMike September 2005
I want to thank everyone that attended the 5th Annual 9 11 Memorial Motorcycle Parade 2005 in San Francisco, especially those that donated to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation. It was a great success.

We had a large turnout as usual. Dudley Perkins HD did a great job hosting the event by providing the staging area and they had plenty of coffee and donuts for the participants. My deepest thanks to Tom Perkins. We had bikers from as far away as San Diego and long distance rider went to a fella from Louisiana. The participants went all out this year decorating their bikes in red, white and blue and there were some really enormous flags on the bikes. In particular there was one flag from ground zero that Angelo from Novato flew from what looked like a ships mast on his bike adorned with bull horns and he rode this thing on the freeway! You have to see the pictures to believe it. The kids from the burn foundation rode along in the parade on Jim Whitecastle’s fire engine at the front of the pack with the Pathfinders MC and Messengers MC providing an honor escort. The parade, Angelo and his huge flag, Jim’s fire engine with the kids, Pathfinders MC, Messengers MC and parade participants were on TV news channels 2 and 4 at 10pm. The event was viewed by tens of thousands of spectators who just loved it. They screamed “God Bless you, I love America, Remember 9 11” and waved to the bikers as the passed by. Thousands of photos were taken.

I had a personal motorcycle police escort provided by Scott Satrom and Kelson McKlain who came all the way up from San Diego to lead the parade with me. We lost our customary SFPD motorcycle police escort near the beginning of the parade because the President of Cambodia flew in right as we took off and they had to go protect him. We did fine on our own and we didn’t need any protection LOL.

At the Maritime Museum we had a really special display of 9 11 history, missing person fliers, the 9 11 Bead Quilt, and an especially 9-11 painted ambulance provided by my friend Mitch Mendler, vice president World Memorial. Mitch transported all this from San Diego for us and the people of San Francisco. Thank you Mitch. We ended the parade at the Maritime Museum with a patriotic speech by NitrosMike, the Pledge to Allegiance, the song God Bless America by Suzie Hart and moment of silence for the victims and heroes of 9-11 under a huge flag displayed by SFFD Ladder Truck 16. I am looking forward to next year and I am thinking of September 9, 2006 a Saturday, as the Memorial Parade date. Please consider scheduling club motorcycle runs, campouts and other events around this date so that we can have a large turnout to show the citizens that we have not forgotten our heroes and to let the survivors of the victims know we continue to honor their loss.
